The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are working overtime in an attempt to trade quarterback Josh Freeman as the rift between the team and former first-round pick continues to grow. It has even been reported that the Bucs are in the process of contacting every single NFL team in an attempt to move Freeman. Their efforts have been met with tepid interest at best.
Freeman is in his fifth year in the NFL and it would appear his time in Tampa Bay is coming to an end, but it doesn’t seem like any other NFL has interest in picking him and the $6.2 million in guaranteed money left on his contract. The Tennessee Titans just lost quarterback Jake Locker for four to six weeks, yet they reportedly have no interest in Freeman.
On Monday night Freeman issued a statement saying he “voluntarily” entered the NFL’s drug program because he takes medication to treat ADHD. He further stated that he has never tested positive for any illegal drugs and has passed 46 NFL drug tests.
FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer also claims the relationship between Freeman and the Bucs is “irreparable” and we have not talked to a single person who disagrees with that assessment.
Freeman is still just 25 years old and at 6-6 and 248 pounds he’s a physical specimen who certainly has the talent to play the quarterback position. That said, his personality and attitude obviously leave a lot to be desired and the Bucs are done dealing with it. They are ready to move on with rookie Mike Glennon under center.
In three games so far this season, Freeman has completed 43 of 94 passes (45.7 percent) for 571 yards, with two touchdowns and three interceptions. His quarterback rating is a dismal 59.3.
For his career, Freeman has completed 58.2 percent of his passes for 13,534 yards, while averaging 6.88 yards per attempt, and tossing 80 touchdowns with 66 interceptions. His career quarterback rating is 78.8.
Those numbers don’t look terrible on the surface, but the problem for Freeman is that he never built on a 2010 season where he completed 61.4 percent of his passes for 3,451 yards with 25 touchdowns and just six interceptions. His quarterback rating that year was by far the best in his career at 95.9.
Since 2010, Freeman has thrown 45 touchdowns and 42 interceptions, while also fumbling 14 times.
